Learning Outcomes and Application This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to clean industrial plant, machinery and surrounds associated with electricity generation stations and related surroundings. It may also include the removal of excess, or oil based, soil.The removal of impurities is required to facilitate repairs, maintenance, refurbishment or the inspection of plant and machinery. Cleaning therefore, is often the first task performed in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of power generation plant. Competency in this unit requires the ability to plan and prepare for the cleaning of industrial plant and equipment, conduct cleaning and complete work. Individuals will, in general, work as an operator, in a power generation facility. Power generation plant operators are typically trained and authorised to isolate, prepare plant and issue permits to work.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.Note: Workplace practiceThe application of the skills and knowledge described in this unit may require a licence or training permit to practice in the workplace where work is carried out on gas and electrical installations. Additional conditions may apply under state and territory legislative and regulatory licensing requirements.

Element: Plan and prepare for work
  • Requirements are identified from work orders and are confirmed with appropriate personnel, in accordance with workplace procedures
       
Element: Work, Health and Safety (WHS)/Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations, legislative requirements, industry standards, codes of practice, manufacturers’ specifications, environmental obligations and workplace procedures are identified, applied and monitored
       
Element: Resources including cleaning agents, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and tools are obtained and inspected for compliance with job specifications, in accordance with Safety Data Sheets (SDS)/Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and workplace procedures
       
Element: Work is sequenced and prioritised, in accordance with workplace procedures
       
Element: Potential hazards are identified and prevention and risk control measures are implemented, in accordance with workplace procedures
       
Element: Work area is prepared, in accordance with workplace procedures
       
Element: Conduct industrial plant and equipment cleaning
  • Isolations are confirmed with appropriate personnel, in accordance with workplace procedures
       
Element: Surfaces are applied, where required, with suitable cleaning agent to assist in release of soil or oil residue, in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and workplace procedures
       
Element: Cleaning equipment and accessories are operated, in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and workplace procedures
       
Element: Industrial plant and equipment is cleaned, in accordance with the workplace procedures
       
Element: Residual waste is directed to suitable disposal points, in accordance with workplace procedures and environmental legislation
       
Element: Final cleaning inspection is carried out, in accordance with workplace procedures

  • Cleaning is completed and appropriate personnel are notified, in accordance with workplace procedures
